Join me, Joanne Price, Wood Engravers’ Network President and founder/owner of Starpointe Studio, June 9–June 15, 2019 in Brasstown, North Carolina at the John C. Campbell Folk School for an immersive week of Wood Engraving: Historic Letterpress Illustration. John C. Campbell Folk School has a long tradition of keeping old crafts fresh and alive amid the beautiful and peaceful setting of the Appalachian Mountains. Wood engraving creates fine details with bold woodcut characteristics, perfect for adding illustrations to letterpress cards, artist books, broadsides, or as stand-alone images. Learn to cut your own original drawings into end-grain hardwood blocks and print them in a limited edition. Instruction will cover materials, creating and transferring images, tool sharpening, engraving, setting printer’s type by hand, and proofing. We will examine wood engraving’s history through a presentation and interaction with historic books and prints. All levels welcome; some drawing experience helpful, but not required.
